Frequently Asked Questions
What is trolling?
In gerneral trolling is a method of fishing where one or more fishing lines, baited with lures, are drawn through the water. This is behind a moving boat and the speed can vary from drift to 3 knots. This is depending on the Lure. Trolling is used to catch predators. With the Mard Reap Hybrid Swimbait you can troll with a speed from 3 up to 5 km/h.
Which fishing rod do I need for the Mard Reap Swimbait?
The right Rod
If you offer a big bait with big triple hooks on a light and soft rod, it can happen that the fish does not get the necessary back pressure and does not get hooked.
Conversely, it can happen with very heavy equipment and small bait with thin hooks that the fish cuts out at the bite. Bait weight, tribble hooks, reel and rod are related and should be matched.
With a spinning rod of 40g to 60g casting weight it is possible to fish our small 19 cm hybrid swimbait. The fishing chances are better with the light trolling, because not only pikes, but also large lake trout, zander, big bass and other predators can cought.
However, if you specifically target pikes, catfish, large zanders, muskey or big bass you should bet on the 26 cm or 34 cm model. For the 26cm Swimbait a rod with about 110g casting weight would be possible and with the 34cm Swimbait about 180g casting weight is optimal. The optimal rod is bending a little bit when the fish is sucking in the bait and then the rod has a lot of back pressure.
Which reel is needed for trolling
Multi reel vs stationary reel
This is a matter of taste. Both have their eligibility as well as advantages and disadvantages. A clear advantage of the multi-reel is the constant and straight line guide. The line gets no spin through the brake and so the line lasts longer. It is important that the reel contains good and high quality components. It already happened to me that a crank broke off in the middle of the drill because the retaining pin on the crank was too thin. This is not really fun with a big fish on the hook.
An important factor in the fishing reel is max drag load. That’s the maximum backpressure the reel can offer. This must necessarily be tuned with the line and rod. If the drag of the reel is set to hard and the drag load is to high in relation to the line, it may happen that the line breaks off and the fish and the new bait is gone. You can already see the principle here. A perch on a heavy off-shore reel does not fit together.
When you come to the desition of the right quality in reels and rods your trusted seller will be happy to adive you. Here is a good technical advice very much worth. Buy good fishing stuff!
Sideplaner? Yes or no?
Sideplaner? yes or no?
In general a catch without Sideplaner is the more nice. A sideplaner on the trolling rod has the task to extend the distance between the bait and the boat and also between multible rods. In addition you can fish deep diving lures in flat water with a sideplaner.
If you fish really flat it make sense that you give the sideplaner more distance to the boat.
What is the recommended trolling speed?
The trolling speed should be chosen in relation to the required action of the lure. You can vary trolling speed from 3 to 6 km/h. If you wish less action troll slow, if you wish more action go faster.
How much is the Mard Reap Hybrid Swimbait diving depth?
This date is not easy to give. It is also depending on the lengh and thickness of the fishing line. The diving depth is maximum 3m for the 19cm Swimbait, 5m for the 26cm Swimbait and 8m for the 34cm Swimbait with 30Meter line between boat and lure.
Less string length also means less diving depth. Line lengths over 50 meters cause a strong buoyancy of the line by the forward motion and the bait runs only minimally deeper, because the line makes a bow in the water.
